Try the vectorstream editor in your browser

This is the real editor, not a mock-up. Draw areas that share a border, drag a corner and watch both neighbours follow, then export GeoJSON.

  • Pre-release previewvectorstream is not published yet. The editor may still change.
  • Your data stays hereDocuments are saved in this browser only. Nothing is sent to a server.
  • Labels in GermanThe editor's own labels are German for now. The tool keys work in any language.

The editor

One editing core runs on all three map libraries. Switching reloads the editor.

Best on a larger screen. The editor is not laid out for phones yet.

Loading the editor…

The editor is a full application and loads once this area comes into view.

What you can try

Everything in the toolbar works

These are the tools of the editor you see above. Keys in brackets switch tools.

  • DrawPolygons (P), rectangles (R), circles (C), lines (L), points (N), markers (M), text (T) and freehand shapes (F), plus triangle and star stamps.
  • Select and transformSelect areas and move, rotate or scale them (V). The lasso (Q) selects several at once.
  • EditDrag corners and edges, or drag an edge midpoint to add a corner (A). A corner shared by two areas moves both.
  • Cut a stripDraw a shape over existing areas to cut it out of all of them (S). Difference (D) cuts it only from the selected areas.
  • Union and splitMerge two neighbouring areas (U), or split one by joining two of its corners (X).
  • Straighten and simplifySquare up corners and remove jitter (G), or thin out an outline (I).
  • SnappingCorners snap onto existing corners and edges. The magnet in the toolbar switches snapping off; holding Alt lifts it for a moment.
  • Layer treeAdd, hide, lock and reorder layers in the panel on the right.
  • Undo and redoEvery step can be undone exactly (Ctrl+Z, Cmd+Z on a Mac). The History panel lists the steps.
  • GeoJSON in and outImport a GeoJSON file as a new document, export the current one, or read and edit the GeoJSON text in the JSON panel.
  • Several documentsKeep as many documents as you like. Each one is saved in your browser while you work.

All features

Try this first

Four steps to see the shared border

Draw in an empty spot of the map. The example document already holds a few areas; leave them as they are.

  1. Step one

    Draw two neighbours

Press P for the polygon tool. Click four corners, then click the first corner to close the shape. Draw a second shape next to it and click the same two corners along the shared edge: they snap onto each other.

  2. Step two

    Drag the shared corner

Press A for the edit tool and drag one of the shared corners. Both shapes follow, because the border between them is stored once.

  3. Step three

    Undo it

Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac), or use the arrow in the History panel. Both shapes return to their earlier outline in one step.

  4. Step four

    Export the GeoJSON

Click Export in the Document panel to download your drawing as a GeoJSON file, or open the JSON tab at the right edge of the map to read it.

FAQ

Playground questions

What the editor above does and does not do.

Is the playground the real vectorstream editor?
Yes. The playground page loads the actual vectorstream editor application, not a recording or a mock-up. vectorstream is in pre-release, so its interface may still change.
Where does vectorstream store my documents?
In the browser only. The vectorstream editor saves each document in IndexedDB on your device while you work and sends nothing to a server. Clearing the site data of the page removes the documents, so export a GeoJSON file for any drawing you want to keep.
Which map libraries does it run on?
vectorstream runs the same editing core on Leaflet, OpenLayers and MapLibre GL. The buttons above the editor reload it on another library, and the documents you saved stay available on each of them.
Can I export my drawing?
Yes. vectorstream exports the current document as GeoJSON with the Export button in the Document panel, and the JSON tab shows the same GeoJSON as text with a copy button. A GeoJSON file can also be imported as a new document.
Does the playground work offline?
Not fully. vectorstream edits and saves in the browser without a server, but the page has to be loaded from the network and the map background is drawn from OpenStreetMap tiles, so a connection is needed to see the map.
