Site and lease planning for energy and renewables

Lay out lease areas across landowner parcels, take exclusions off the site edge and place array blocks, then export the whole layout as GeoJSON.

At a glance

vectorstream is a topology-aware geometry editor for web maps. Renewable energy developers use it to plan sites: lease areas follow landowner parcels and share their borders, exclusions along the site boundary are taken off with the difference tool, and solar array blocks are drawn, copied and rotated into place. The layout is exported as GeoJSON for land, permitting and design teams.

Use cases

Site planning tasks

01

Lease areas across landowner parcels

A project site is put together from parcels owned by different landowners. Lease areas follow those parcels, and when an option boundary is renegotiated the neighbouring lease area changes with it.

  • Move a lease boundary once for both lease areas
  • Merge parcels into one lease area with union
  • Split a lease area when terms differ
  • Trace lease areas along parcel boundaries
  • Label lease areas with text labels
02

Exclusion areas

Rights of way, wetland margins and other constraints along the site boundary are taken out of the site. The difference tool removes a drawn exclusion that reaches across the outer edge and leaves the remaining site as its own polygon, ready for layout.

  • Take boundary exclusions off with difference
  • Cut a strip off a site edge for an access corridor
  • Draw exclusions as polygons, rectangles or circles
  • Undo a subtraction to the exact previous state
03

Array blocks and infrastructure

Solar blocks are repeated rectangles turned to the orientation of the site. Turbines are points, cables and tracks are lines, and all of them sit on the same map as the leases.

  • Draw array blocks with the rectangle tool
  • Copy blocks and rotate them into place
  • Move a block until it docks flush against the next
  • Place turbine positions as markers
  • Draw cable routes and tracks as lines

Why topology

Why site layouts need topology

Leases that match the land

Lease areas share boundaries with each other and follow parcel lines. Stored once, a renegotiated boundary updates both leases, so the land plan never contradicts itself.

Layouts you can iterate

Site layouts go through many revisions. Exact undo and documents saved automatically in the browser let a developer compare layouts without losing the last good one.

One geometry for every team

Land, permitting and engineering teams each work in their own tools. A GeoJSON export of leases, exclusions and blocks gives all of them the same geometry.

How it works

How a development team uses it

  1. Step 01

    Bring in the parcels

Import landowner parcels and known constraints as GeoJSON.

  2. Step 02

    Define the lease areas

Merge or split parcels into lease areas that share their borders.

  3. Step 03

    Take out the exclusions

Take exclusion strips and access corridors off the site edge.

  4. Step 04

    Lay out and export

Place array blocks, turbines and cable routes, then export the layout as GeoJSON.

FAQ

Energy and renewables questions

Can vectorstream take exclusion areas off a site?
Yes, where they reach the site edge. vectorstream's difference tool removes a drawn exclusion, such as a right of way along the boundary, from the selected site polygons. An exclusion in the middle of the site is rejected, because the tool only works from the outer edge.
Can solar array blocks be copied and rotated?
vectorstream can copy shapes and rotate them with the transform tool, so a block of panels can be repeated and aligned with the site.
Do adjacent lease areas share their boundary?
In vectorstream, adjacent lease areas share one stored boundary, so renegotiating the line changes both leases in one edit.
Which map libraries can site planning tools use with vectorstream?
Site planning tools on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL can embed vectorstream; the editing core is identical on all three.
Does vectorstream calculate energy yield or setbacks?
No. vectorstream edits geometry. Yield modelling and setback rules belong in engineering tools, which can read the layout from vectorstream as GeoJSON.
