Field and parcel editing for agriculture

Draw fields once, then split them into management zones, cut margin strips along the edge and merge fields when the crop plan changes.

At a glance

vectorstream is a web map geometry editor in which neighbouring polygons share their borders. In agriculture it is used to maintain field boundaries, management zones and margin strips: moving the line between two zones changes both of them, and a strip cut off the outer edge of a field leaves the rest of the field intact. Fields import and export as GeoJSON, so the editor fits next to farm management and agronomy software.

Use cases

Field work on the map

01

Field boundaries

Field outlines change slowly, but they do change: a hedge is removed, two fields are farmed as one, a corner is sold. Each of these changes touches the neighbouring field as well.

  • Merge two fields into one with union
  • Move a shared field border once
  • Trace a new field along existing boundaries
  • Simplify over-detailed boundaries from imported data
  • Check imported GeoJSON geometry before editing
02

Management zones within a field

Zones divide a field by soil, drainage or past performance. They cover the field exactly, so a zone boundary is one line between two zones, not two lines that almost agree.

  • Split a field into zones along straight lines between corners
  • Draw a zone freehand, then refine its vertices
  • Remove a vertex, or add one from a midpoint
  • Keep fields and zones in a layer tree
03

Margins, strips and headlands

Field margins, buffer strips along watercourses and headlands run along the field edge. Cutting a strip off the outer edge takes it out of the cropped area, and the field keeps its shared borders with the fields beside it.

  • Cut a strip off a field edge
  • Snap strip ends to field corners
  • Label fields and zones with text labels
  • Export the trimmed fields as GeoJSON

Why topology

Why field maps need shared borders

Zones that add up to the field

Zones drawn as separate shapes never quite meet, and every mismatch is a strip that belongs to no zone. Stored as one shared edge, a zone boundary keeps the zones flush with each other and with the field.

Season after season

Fields are edited every season. Exact undo and documents saved automatically in the browser let an agronomist try a new zoning and go back if it does not work out.

Fits the farm software chain

Field data moves between farm management and agronomy tools as files. GeoJSON import with a geometry check and GeoJSON export make vectorstream one editing step in that chain.

How it works

How a farm or adviser uses it

  1. Step 01

    Import the field boundaries

Load fields as GeoJSON. Problems in the file are reported before anyone edits.

  2. Step 02

    Divide into zones

Split each field into management zones along straight lines between its corners.

  3. Step 03

    Cut the margins

Cut buffer strips or headlands off the field edge wherever they are needed.

  4. Step 04

    Export for the season

Export fields and zones as GeoJSON for planning, records or field maps.

FAQ

Agriculture questions

Can vectorstream split a field into management zones?
Yes. vectorstream's split tool divides a field along a straight line between two of its corners, and the resulting zones share their borders with each other. A new corner can be added first from the midpoint handle of any boundary.
How is a buffer strip taken off a field edge in vectorstream?
The cut tool in vectorstream cuts a strip off the outer edge of a field polygon, so the field no longer covers that strip. The drawn outline has to reach across the outer edge, and vectorstream rejects a piece in the middle of a field.
Can two fields be merged into one?
vectorstream's union tool merges two adjoining fields into a single polygon.
Which map libraries can farm software use with vectorstream?
Farm software built on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL can embed vectorstream, since all three adapters share one editing core.
Where does vectorstream save field edits?
vectorstream saves documents automatically in the browser's IndexedDB storage and exports fields as GeoJSON for long-term storage in another system.
