Map editing for urban and regional planning

Draft land-use areas, zoning districts and development blocks that meet exactly. Work on variants side by side and export the chosen plan as GeoJSON.

At a glance

vectorstream is a geometry editor for web maps that keeps planning areas topologically connected: the border between two zones is stored once. Planners can redraw a district line, split a block or merge two land-use areas, and every adjacent area follows the change. Draft plans are saved automatically in the browser as separate documents and export as GeoJSON.

Use cases

Planning work that runs on shared lines

01

Zoning and land-use plans

A land-use plan is a set of areas that together cover a district: housing, mixed use, green space, transport. When a district line moves, the areas on both sides must move with it.

  • Move a zoning boundary once for both districts
  • Split a land-use area between two of its corners
  • Merge two areas when designations combine
  • Trace new areas along existing district lines
  • Group districts, overlays and notes in a layer tree
02

Development blocks and plots

In a masterplan, streets frame the blocks and blocks are divided into plots. Rectangles, corner snapping and the straightening tool give plots clean corners without typing coordinates.

  • Draw plots with the rectangle tool
  • Move a plot until it docks flush against its neighbour
  • Straighten near-square outlines with live numbers
  • Rotate a block layout to follow the street grid
  • Copy a plot layout to the next block

Plan variants for consultation

Planning means comparing options. Keep each option as its own document, saved automatically in the browser, and export only the one that goes out for consultation.

  • Keep several plan documents, saved automatically
  • Annotate areas with text labels
  • Undo restores each earlier state of a variant exactly
  • Import existing plan areas with a geometry check
  • Export the chosen variant as GeoJSON

Why topology

Why plans need connected areas

Districts that fit together

A district line belongs to both districts. Stored once, it cannot drift into a gap or an overlap when one side is redrawn, so the plan stays consistent from one draft to the next.

Variants without risk

Planners try things. Each variant lives in its own document in the browser and every edit can be undone exactly, so an experiment never damages the draft that was agreed.

Fits the portal you run

Planning portals are built on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL. vectorstream runs one editing core behind all three adapters, so the editing behaviour stays the same if the portal changes its map library.

How it works

How a planning team works with it

  1. Step 01

    Start from the base areas

Import existing districts or parcels as GeoJSON, or draw the plan boundary from scratch.

  2. Step 02

    Draft the plan

Split, merge and redraw land-use areas. Shared lines keep neighbouring areas flush while you work.

  3. Step 03

    Branch into variants

Open a second document for an alternative layout. Both drafts are saved in the browser as you go.

  4. Step 04

    Hand over the chosen plan

Export the selected variant as GeoJSON for the planning system, the consultation map or a GIS.

FAQ

Urban and regional planning questions

Can vectorstream keep zoning districts free of gaps and overlaps?
Adjacent zoning districts in vectorstream share one stored border, so editing that border moves both districts and no gap or overlap appears between them.
Can planners keep several plan variants?
Yes. vectorstream saves several documents automatically in the browser, so each plan variant can be kept and edited on its own.
Does vectorstream help draw right-angled building plots?
vectorstream has a rectangle tool for drawing plots and a straightening tool that evens out near-square outlines while showing live numbers.
Which map libraries can a planning portal use with vectorstream?
vectorstream supports Leaflet, OpenLayers and MapLibre GL through adapters on one shared editing core, so a planning portal can keep the library it already uses.
What format do vectorstream plans export to?
vectorstream exports plan areas as GeoJSON, an open format that GIS and planning software can read.
