Zone editing for parking and traffic management

Redraw permit areas, parking zones, loading bays and access zones on one city map, where neighbouring zones share each border and every change can be undone.

At a glance

vectorstream is a geometry editor for web maps that stores the border between two zones once. City parking and traffic teams use it to maintain parking zones, residents' permit areas, loading zones, low-emission zones and access-restricted areas: when a permit area grows by one street, the neighbouring area shrinks by the same line. The decisions behind each zone and the zone register stay in the city's own systems, and vectorstream is where the polygons are drawn, reviewed and corrected before export as GeoJSON.

Use cases

Kerbside and zone tasks for a city

01

Parking zones and permit areas

Residents' permit areas and parking zones divide the city into areas that each follow their own rules. A review that moves a street from one permit area to the next changes two areas, and both have to take the same new boundary.

  • Move a permit-area border once for both areas
  • Split a parking zone when a district is reorganised
  • Merge two permit areas into one with union
  • Trace a new zone along existing zone borders
  • Name each permit area with a text label
02

Loading zones and kerbside space

Loading bays, taxi ranks, accessible parking bays and bus stops share the kerb along a street. They are drawn as small rectangles that sit end to end, so a change to one bay must not leave a gap before the next.

  • Draw bays with the rectangle tool
  • Snap a new bay to the corners of the one before it
  • Rotate a row of bays to follow the street
  • Straighten hand-drawn bays into clean rectangles
  • Cut a strip off a bay when a driveway is added
03

Low-emission and access zones

Low-emission zones, car-free centres and access-restricted areas are larger zones with a clear outer boundary. Their edge often follows a ring road, and exceptions along that edge are taken off with the difference tool rather than drawn around.

  • Trace a zone edge along an existing boundary
  • Take exempt strips off the zone edge with difference
  • Simplify an over-detailed zone edge
  • Keep each zone type in its own layer
  • Check imported zone files before editing

Why topology

Why city zone maps need topology

One street, one boundary

Permit areas drawn as separate polygons slowly drift apart along the streets they share, leaving buildings in neither area or in both. vectorstream stores that boundary once, so the areas stay flush through every review.

Proposals beside the current map

A zone review starts as a proposal. vectorstream keeps it as a separate document saved automatically in the browser, so the current zones stay untouched until the proposal is agreed.

Fits the city map stack

Mobility and parking departments run web maps on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL. One vectorstream editing core sits behind all three, so the tools stay the same if the department changes its map library.

How it works

How a city traffic team uses it

  1. Step 01

    Load the zone register

Import parking zones, permit areas and access zones from the city's own records as GeoJSON.

  2. Step 02

    Prepare the proposal

Open a second document, move permit-area borders and lay out new loading bays.

  3. Step 03

    Review the kerb in detail

Straighten bays, snap each new bay to a corner of the last one and undo anything the review turns down.

  4. Step 04

    Return the agreed zones

Export the agreed zones as GeoJSON to the city's records, permit or signage systems.

FAQ

Parking and traffic management questions

Can vectorstream move a street from one permit area to another?
Yes. Permit areas in vectorstream share one stored border, so redrawing the boundary moves the street out of one area and into the next in a single edit.
Can loading bays be drawn end to end along a kerb?
vectorstream draws bays with the rectangle tool and snaps the corners of each new bay onto the corners of the bay before it, so the next bay starts exactly at a corner of the last one.
Can exempt areas be removed from a low-emission zone?
Only at the edge of the zone. The difference tool in vectorstream removes a drawn area from the selected zones when it reaches across their outer edge, for example an exempt strip along a ring road. vectorstream rejects an exempt area in the middle of a zone, because cutting only works from the outer edge.
Does vectorstream issue permits or check vehicles?
No. vectorstream edits zone geometry on a web map. Permit issuing, vehicle checks and the zone register stay in the city's own systems, which receive the polygons from vectorstream as GeoJSON.
Which map libraries can a city parking map use with vectorstream?
City parking and traffic maps on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL can use vectorstream, since each of the three adapters runs the same editing core.
