Embedded map editing for SaaS and mapping products

Ship drawing and editing to users who are not GIS specialists. Shapes snap into place, neighbours stay connected and undo always works.

At a glance

vectorstream is a geometry editor that product teams embed in their own web map, on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL. It gives end users drawing tools for points, lines, polygons, rectangles, circles and text, plus editing that keeps neighbouring shapes connected through shared borders. Undo is exact, documents are saved automatically in the browser, and the product reads every result back as GeoJSON.

Use cases

What product teams embed it for

01

Drawing for non-specialists

Users of a scheduling, booking or field-service app want to mark an area, not learn GIS. Snapping, docking when a shape is moved and a forgiving undo make that safe for them.

  • Points, lines, polygons, rectangles, circles and text
  • Snap to corners; moved shapes dock flush against edges
  • Hold Alt to place a point without snapping
  • Undo returns the exact previous state
02

Areas that must not overlap

Many products divide space between users, teams or time slots: delivery zones, territories, plots. Shared borders let a user adjust one line without creating a gap or a strip covered twice.

  • Move a shared border once for both areas
  • Split and merge areas
  • Trace new areas along existing borders
  • Lasso-select and copy several areas
03

Projects users come back to

Users work on the same map over several days. Several documents are saved automatically in the browser, and a layer tree keeps larger projects in order.

  • Several documents saved in IndexedDB
  • Layers organised in a tree
  • GeoJSON import with a geometry check
  • GeoJSON export to your backend
  • Move and rotate shapes with the transform tool

Why topology

Why embed instead of building in-house

Topology is a project of its own

Keeping shared borders consistent through split, union, cut and undo is a large engineering project on its own. vectorstream ships that core, so your team can work on the product around it.

Your map library, your choice

Adapters for Leaflet, OpenLayers and MapLibre GL run the same core. A product can move to another map library later and keep the editing behaviour its users already know.

A plain data contract

Everything goes in and out as GeoJSON. Your backend stores features the way it already does, with an open format between the editor and your database.

How it works

How it fits into a product

  1. Step 01

    Pick the adapter

Choose the adapter for the map library your product already renders with.

  2. Step 02

    Load the user's data

Pass the user's existing shapes in as GeoJSON.

  3. Step 03

    Let users edit

Users draw, snap, split and undo inside your own interface.

  4. Step 04

    Store the result

Read changes back as GeoJSON and save them with your product's own records.

FAQ

Questions from product teams

Can vectorstream be embedded in an existing web app?
Yes. vectorstream runs inside an existing web map through adapters for Leaflet, OpenLayers and MapLibre GL, so a product keeps its current map and gains the editing tools.
What makes vectorstream suitable for non-specialist users?
Snapping to existing corners, flush docking when a shape is moved against an edge and an exact undo lower the cost of mistakes in vectorstream, so a wrong click is always one step away from being taken back.
Where does vectorstream store a user's work?
vectorstream saves several documents automatically in the browser using IndexedDB. For permanent storage, the product exports the features as GeoJSON to its own backend.
Is there a vectorstream package to install?
No package has been published yet. vectorstream is currently in pre-release.
Which map libraries can a web product use with vectorstream?
A product built on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL can embed vectorstream, and the editing behaviour is the same on all three.
