Stand and compartment mapping for forestry

Redraw a stand boundary after thinning, split off a harvest block or merge two compartments. Neighbouring stands follow every change.

At a glance

vectorstream is a topology-aware geometry editor for web maps. In forestry and land management, stands and compartments are stored with shared borders, so a boundary redrawn after a harvest or a survey changes both adjoining stands. Harvest blocks are split off existing stands, rides and tracks are drawn as lines, and the stand map imports and exports as GeoJSON.

Use cases

Forest map work it supports

01

Stand mapping

Stands are outlined over a basemap and checked on the ground. When a boundary is corrected, the stand on the other side of the line has to change with it.

  • Move a stand border once for both stands
  • Outline a stand freehand, then refine it
  • Simplify boundaries with too many vertices
  • Snap new stands to existing corners
  • Trace along existing stand borders
02

Harvest and operations planning

A harvest block is carved out of one or more stands, and access is planned along rides and tracks. Planners draw the block, check where it meets its neighbours and adjust it before work is scheduled.

  • Split a harvest block off a stand
  • Take a streamside strip off the block edge with difference
  • Draw rides and tracks with the line tool
  • Mark landings and features with markers
  • Undo a block back to the exact previous layout
03

Estate and compartment records

Larger estates group stands into compartments and compartments into management units. A layer tree mirrors that structure, and the whole estate exports as one GeoJSON file.

  • Organise compartments and stands in a layer tree
  • Merge compartments after a reorganisation
  • Label compartments with text labels
  • Export the estate as GeoJSON

Why topology

Why stand maps need topology

Neighbouring stands stay flush

Stand maps that store every outline separately grow slivers along each boundary that was ever edited. A shared edge has only one position, so neighbouring stands cannot drift apart.

Drafts without damage

Operations planning goes through several drafts. Undo restores each earlier stand layout exactly, so a planner can test a block boundary and step back without repair work.

A stand map that travels

Inventory and planning tools trade forest data as files. GeoJSON import with a geometry check and GeoJSON export keep the stand map portable between them.

How it works

How a forest planner uses it

  1. Step 01

    Load the stand map

Import stands and compartments as GeoJSON. The geometry check flags broken shapes.

  2. Step 02

    Correct and update

Redraw stand borders after a survey or a harvest. Each border moves once for both stands.

  3. Step 03

    Plan the operation

Split off harvest blocks, take retention strips off the block edge and draw access along the rides.

  4. Step 04

    Hand the plan over

Export the updated stand map and the operation plan as GeoJSON.

FAQ

Forestry and land management questions

Can vectorstream keep adjoining forest stands aligned?
Yes. vectorstream stores the border between two adjoining stands once, so correcting it changes both stands in a single edit.
Can a harvest block be split off an existing stand?
vectorstream's split tool divides a stand along a straight line between two of its corners, which turns part of the stand into a separate harvest block.
Can vectorstream take a retention strip off a harvest block?
Yes, at the edge of the block. The difference tool in vectorstream removes a drawn shape from the selected polygons when the shape reaches across their outer edge, for example a retention strip along a stream. A retention patch in the middle of a block is rejected.
Which map libraries can a forest planning portal use with vectorstream?
Forest planning portals on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL can use vectorstream, since one editing core powers all three adapters.
Can over-detailed stand boundaries be simplified?
vectorstream includes a simplify tool that reduces the number of vertices in a boundary that was drawn or imported in too much detail.
