Boundary editing for government and public administration

Redraw a ward, a school catchment or a permit area, and every neighbouring area follows the same line. The data stays in GeoJSON.

At a glance

vectorstream is a web map editor that stores shared borders once, so administrative areas that touch always meet exactly. Public bodies can use it in internal web applications to maintain districts, wards, school catchments, collection rounds and permit areas: when a border is redrawn, the areas on both sides change together. Edits can be undone exactly, imports are checked, and data is exchanged as GeoJSON.

Use cases

Public sector boundary work

01

Administrative and electoral areas

Wards, districts and polling areas cover a territory completely. A boundary review moves lines between areas, and each moved line must belong to both areas at once.

  • Move a district boundary once for both districts
  • Split an area when a new district is created
  • Merge areas after a reorganisation
  • Trace new areas along existing boundaries
  • Label areas with text labels
02

Service catchments

School catchments, collection rounds and inspection districts are redrawn as populations and services change. Officers prepare options before a decision is published.

  • Keep each option as a separate document in the browser
  • Undo any option back to the exact previous state
  • Lasso-select several catchments at once
  • Start an option from an exported copy of the catchments
03

Permits and public works

Permit areas, event sites and road works are drawn by staff who work with maps only now and then. Rectangles, circles and snapping cover most shapes, and the GeoJSON export feeds the case management system.

  • Draw rectangles, circles and polygons
  • Snap to existing corners, or hold Alt to place freely
  • Mark locations with markers
  • Export areas as GeoJSON for case management

Why topology

Why public boundary data needs topology

A line that belongs to both sides

A border between two districts is one line. Stored once, it cannot leave a strip of land outside both districts, or inside both, after a boundary review.

Try a change, then go back

Exact undo restores the previous state, including the neighbouring areas. Staff can test a change during a meeting and return to the published boundaries afterwards.

An open exchange format

GeoJSON is an open, widely supported format. Importing it with a geometry check and exporting it again keeps vectorstream compatible with existing GIS and records systems.

How it works

How a public body uses it

  1. Step 01

    Load the current boundaries

Import the published districts or catchments as GeoJSON.

  2. Step 02

    Prepare the options

Edit boundaries in a separate document per option. Shared borders keep the areas flush.

  3. Step 03

    Discuss and revise

Undo restores earlier versions exactly while the options are compared.

  4. Step 04

    Publish the decision

Export the agreed boundaries as GeoJSON for the GIS, the website or the records system.

FAQ

Government and public sector questions

Can vectorstream redraw district boundaries without leaving gaps?
Yes. Adjacent districts in vectorstream share one stored border, so redrawing it changes both districts and no gap or overlap opens between them.
Can several boundary options be prepared in parallel?
vectorstream saves several documents automatically in the browser, so each boundary option can be prepared as a document of its own.
Can vectorstream run inside an existing internal web map?
vectorstream attaches to web maps built on Leaflet, OpenLayers or MapLibre GL, so it can be added to an internal map application that uses one of these libraries.
What data format does vectorstream use for exchange?
vectorstream imports and exports GeoJSON, the open format defined in RFC 7946.
Is vectorstream a records or case management system?
No. vectorstream edits geometry on a web map. Case files, decisions and publication stay in the systems a public body already uses.
